What inspires you: In business: our customers. We're passionate about personalized customer service and knowing that what we design means something to people. That inspires me to no end. In life: all the little, small pleasures. Cause that has touched your heart: I feel especially drawn to causes supporting children and pets- they need a voice. I love BestFriends.org. They aide animals of all kinds and were the first ones on the scene rescuing pets when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Also the Central Asia Institute works to build schools educate girls and young women in remote and very rural areas of Pakistan and Afganistan who otherwise wouldn't be able to go to school. They promote books not bombs and believe educating people is the best way to promote peace and understanding between our cultures.

If you could be anywhere in the world: On a beach in the Mexican Riveria watching my husband fish the flats and enjoying some fresh Ceviche - I yearn to be totally disconnected for even a few days.

Favorite shoes: My Theory Black patent boots with double gold zippers. (Although they might be usurped by the Uggs next season Jimmy Choo is working on a collaboration to design.)

Favorite designers: Diane von Furstenburg, Narciso Rodriguez, Chloe and Vera Wang. I love the designer collaborations at Target too.

Most prized item of clothing and why: My Claridge + King His is Hers Shirt - It is the most comfy nightshirt I own.

Most prized accessory and why: My vintage Gucci clutch. Because my sister got it on her first trip to Paris.

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: My diamond dome ring. Because is was created from my Grandad's tie clip - A grandfather whom I never met.

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: I have necklace with a “g” on it that stands for Grant. He loves for me to wear it & I do everyday. I have had it for 2 years & he asked my mom to get me an “m” because that is his favorite letter for mama. I wear “m&g” now.

Most prized accessory and why: my helmut lang scarf at the moment...because it is absolutely freezing cold and i don't even want to take it off when i go to sleep...and, like my rick coat, it is gray and goes with every single thing in my entire wardrobe

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: my grandmother's charm bracelet that she left to me when she passed away when i was in 2nd grade...because the noise it makes on my wrist immediately gives me the image of her in my head...her look, her smell, her everything

 What excites you about waking in the morning: That I get to go to my own clothing stores that I started all by myself and style people in clothes that I have selectively chosen for my stores, ensuring them that when they leave SWANK that they will not only have a unique piece of clothing but be able to walk in a room and feel confident knowing they look like NO ONE ELSE. It has been a dream of mine since I was a small girl, so to be able to have not ONE but TWO clothing stores has been a super surreal experience! Seriously, I lay in bed at night sometimes, thinking is this happening?

 What would surprise people about you if they knew: I am athletic and signed to play College basketball at Ole Miss. People think I am so girly bc I love Fashion and all the things that come with it, but I am actually a huge sports lover also. I feel like me being so competitive growing up playing basketball is what molded me into the person I am today. I don't lose at much and if I do I DO NOT like it. I love pressure situations and I love competition, it seriously drives me. I led my high School basketball team to a perfect season, with a record of 46-0, and then signed to play basketball at Ole Miss, but never made it to the season, because it was NOT at all the path I saw myself going down.

Why is style important: It is your identity and how you can express yourself without words. 

Cause that has touched your heart: Helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina because it affected my home state of Mississippi.

Favorite shoes: Barbara Bui, YSL, Dior, Gucci, Balenciaga, Etro Favorite designers: Alice Temperley, Marchesa, Jenny Packham, Mara Hoffman, Vivienne Westwood, Iodice, Tom Ford, Rozae Nichols, Rag and Bone, ... this list goes on.

 Most prized item of clothing and why: Currently it would have to be my Over the Knee Barbara Bui boots, they just make me feel like I am on a runway sometimes!! haha :) Seriously, something about those shoes make me invincible.  

Most prized accessory and why: My Louis Vuitton luggage. I started collecting it when I was in high school, and each piece I own reminds me of different things I have done and the places I have been.

What inspires you: I am constantly inspired by the purity and honesty and brilliance of my grandchildrren and all children. I so wish we could, as adults, learn that from them.

What can you not live without: I should say my husband Michael or my grandchildren, but I have to admit, my makeup.

Favorite song: "Somewhere over the Rainbow"... just call my cell phone.....I played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz with the Memphis Children's Theatre when I was 11, so many many years ago....and..that has always been my most favorite song.
What excites you about waking in the morning: Just being able to create whatever I want to do with my day excites me. Sometimes, it's just lighting my candles, being quiet and listening to music or reading whatever inspires me; sometimes its looking forward to lunch with friends, or collaborating at meetings on how to improve the lives of others; and if my grandchildren are visiting ,I can't wait to share the day's activities with them. They are such tremendous fun.

Style icons: I just love to see beautiful women anywhere and at any age, especially my little granddaughter Kate, who at 6 years of age is so imaginative and creative and definite with her own personal style...and then, there's my beautiful niece Paget. Now she's a WOW.

Why is style important: Personal style is important because it's the creative expression of who you are...just like walking into your home, it tells everyone about you and your personality.

Cause that has touched your heart: Any cause that benefits women and children...and at this moment, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. God Bless Bruce and Dolly.

If you could be anywhere in the world: I always dream of being at the One and Only Resort on Paradise Island where Michael and I spent our honeymoon, or anywhere on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Simply divine.

Favorite designers: For shoes, I love Giuseppe Zanotti, Christian Louboutin. Jimmy Choo, and of course, Stuart Weitzman. And for clothes, I adore anything Valentino! Every piece he creates is so elegant and beautiful and feminine. His fabrics are heavenly and his purses make my heart beat. I also love anything I have from Donna Karan and Armani, and whatever I buy at Gus Mayer, of course.

Most prized item of clothing and why: Without a doubt, I adore my beautiful wedding dress by Vera Wang. I was able to go to New York and be personally attended to at her bridal store on Madison Ave six years ago. It was like being in a fairytale, for sure! Most prized accessory and why: My husband Michael.

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: A diamond and ruby bracelet that was my grandmothers. She used to let me play with it when I was little and I love that she left it to me to remind me of our times together.

What excites you about waking in the morning: Exciting and morning are not two words I would ever put together. My morning ritual… sit up, lie back down, sit up, lie down, then bury my head in the pillow and go back to sleep for 20 minutes. Eventually I have to be pushed out of the bed. I am getting a better though. This past month I have been taking Pure Barre at 8:15 am and am totally addicted!

What would surprise people of they knew: I have a B.S. in Management Information Systems and an MBA.

Why is style important: Style is important because it's a channel of self-expression and it is the first impression that someone gets to make. Whether we like it or not we live in a judgmental world. Many people say they do not care what others think, and they express this by not putting time into their appearance. But the truth is that we all care. Taking time to develop your own style and finding looks that flatter your body and lifestyle show to the world that you do care how you are perceived by others. If someone takes the time to develop their own personal style, this drive will more than likely be present in other areas of their life, such as family, relationships, and business.

Cause that has touched your heart: United Cerebral Palsy. I am President of The Civiettes Club, an organization with dedicated fundraising efforts to UCP, and am on the Board of Directors for UCP of Greater Birmingham. In addition to fundraising, the Civiettes provide hands on support to the two UCP centers. For the past 5 years I have been helping to provide “life without limits for people with disabilities” and it has undoubted changed my life. Helping someone that can not help themselves is a truly humbling experience, and really puts one’s priorities in check. The fashion/retail industry can sometimes become a bit egotistical, so my involvement with UCP has been a very important balance in my life.

If you could be anywhere in the world: I would be digging my toes deep in the sands of my secret beach on St. John.

Favorite shoes: My Burberry Rain Boots. In 2004 I went to London with the Samford MBA program. I was convinced that everyone in London wore them, so I begged my mother to take me to the Burberry store in Lenox Mall. On this trip to London I was introduced to the world of boutiques, which in turn led to Manhattan South. I think of this every time it rains and I am looking for puddles to deliberately splash through.

Most prized item of clothing and why: My PRVCY Skinny Jeans - I wear them at least three days a week. I have never found a pair of jeans that fit so well (lifts the booty and slims the thighs like no other!!) And they never stretch out. I do not like doing laundry and I can get 6 or 7 wears out of them before they need to be washed. And the best thing about PRVCY, a portion of proceeds go to Breast Cancer awareness (PRVCY Denim can be found at Manhattan South).

Most prized accessory and why: Many years ago my mother gave me her oldest Louis Vuitton Speedy. She purchased this bag in the 80’s while she was working at BellSouth. It was her first “big” purchase for herself. It doesn’t matter how many new LV bags I have in my closet, I always go back to this one. It reminds me how hard my mother worked to provide me with everything I could ever want and didn’t need. And honestly, the bag still looks amazing! The quality of LV is unsurpassable!

Most prized accessory and why: My vintage Hermes scarf – because my husband purchased it for me in Paris at a fabulous shop at Rue Vieille du Temple AND my Thierry Mugler fragrance.

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: My engagement ring that was inspired by a family heirloom piece AND my inherited collection of cuff links.

Favorite song: Pretty much everything Liza Minnelli sings but my favorites are Maybe This Time and New York, New York.

What excites you about waking in the morning: Coffee, life would be perfect if the minute I woke up I was handed a cup. Also what the day could hold. I’m not a planner, so you never know what might happen and that really excites me. I have to look at each day in positive way because rarely I get coffee in bed.

Style icons: Rita Hayworth in Gilda is what I aspire to be, she was the essence of sensuality. Babe Paley defined effortlessly chic; by tying a scarf on the handle of her purse she started a trend that we still see today. I think she is best described by Truman Capote, “Babe Paley had only one flaw: she was perfect. Other than that she was perfect.” Amanda Brooks is a muse and someone I aspire to be. She has a great understanding of developing a personal style. She wants women to know how to dress in all styles but always looking like themselves and be authentic to who they are.

Why is style important: Your individual style lets people know who you are, like Jean Cocteau said, “style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” Everyone has style and I believe that your style is intuitive and can’t be bad, but you can have bad taste that’s truly tragic.

Cause that has touched your heart: All Animal protection and rights groups, the one I work with is CARA a no kill shelter. There are so many animals that are being mistreated and abandoned; I love helping them have a place to feel safe.

If you could be anywhere in the world: Riding a bike though the Austrian countryside in a Bottega Veneta romantic sundress and big sunglasses on my way to have a picnic.

Favorite shoes: my super high Valentino pumps with a bow on the toe, they make me feel powerful and sexy.

Favorite designers: Halston from the 70‘s and 80’s, Karl Lagerfeld in general, Marc Jacobs for everyday sundresses and purses. Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta for evening wear.

Most prized item of clothing and why: I have a bridesmaid dress from my parents wedding. It’s a Halston pattern and the perfect lavender; I wear it with a belt as a bohemian style sundress, its so forever.

Most prized accessory and why: All my bracelets, I love collecting and stacking bracelets. My favorites are my Victorian cuffs that my parents have giving me, I’m addicted to them, they have such a rich look that makes a white v-neck and jeans look chic and put together.

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: My Grandmother’s dog tag that is gold plated on a long chain. Against her parents wishes she joined the army and fought in WWI, where she carried the American flag in the D Day Parade in Paris. She was a huge inspiration in my life and really helped shape me in to who I am today. When I wear it I’m reminded to be strong, true to myself and use the good manners like she taught me to always have.

Most prized accessory and why-The Cartier wristwatch my husband gave me for my 30th birthday. It’s a serious watch that makes me feel like I’ve accomplished a lot. The watch makes me feel like a wife, a mother, and a working woman.

Most prized item of clothing and why: a vintage black lace dress given to me by my old friend and hair/makeup artist, that I wore in a portrait of me by my late friend, artist Alice Pederson.

Local artist design chairs that are auctioned off to people in the community. The money raised from the event benefits baby centered programs at Woman’s Hospital. Such as if a new mother does not have enough money to buy a car seat, this program will provide her one.

If you could be anywhere in the world: New York City with my husband, family, and closest friends. A close second would be on a ski boat

Favorite shoes: Hot pink patent Jimmy Choo sandals (Dress); Loeffler Randal over the knee boots (every day)

Favorite designers: Where do I begin? I am somewhat of a clothes junkie. However, most of my closet consist of: DVF, Trina Turk, Theory, Alice+Olivia, Black Halo. My favorite high end designer is Chanel.

Most prized item of clothing and why: This item changes with the seasons but a few of my faves are Paige skinny leg jeans because they go with everything and you can go anywhere in them; Vintage sequin butterfly cape because it is so unique and it does not go out of style; Alice+Olivia “tinkerbell” dress (silver sequins with white tutu) because it is the ultimate party girl dress.

Most prized accessory and why: I have 2…my black berry because it keeps me in constant communication with family, friends, and work. Black Chanel purse, a fabulous birthday gift my husband gave me.

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: I have two pieces of jewelry I treasure. One being my wedding/engagement ring because it reminds me every day of something very special. Second would be a Tiffany heart locket with a black and white picture of my dad inside. My dad gave my sister and I this locket one year for Christmas. I have never changed the picture inside.

What excites you about waking in the morning: My four kids. (Griffin 11, James 10, Harris 7, Reagan 4) Each of them have such a different personality. We eat breakfast together each morning and are typically wide awake, laughing, dancing and chasing the dogs before heading out the door to school. I never drink coffee!

Cause that has touched your heart: Woodlawn, AL. The community in which One Stop is located and has dedicated time and resources to improving the lives around us. In the process it has also improved who we are.

Favorite shoes: My Donald Pliner tall boots. I bought them in New Orleans on a trip with my Husband, so not only are they comfortable, but they have some nice memories attached.

Favorite designers: I am a jeans person. My favorites are 7 for all Mankind and Lucky Brand T-shirts.

Most prized item of clothing and why: An embroidered vest I bought in Taos, NM when I worked at Los Alamos National Labs in Los Alamos, NM. I don’t think I would wear it anywhere today, but that piece represents a neat time in my life.

Most prized accessory and why: The Rolex watch my husband gave me when One Stop was finally paid in full by New Orleans for the work we had performed after Hurricane Katrina. (Almost $2M over 2 years after all work completed) It represents the challenges and risks taken by an entrepreneur. The hard work it takes to see those risks become good risks. And the many times God has seen One Stop through a storm that should have ended it all.

Most treasured piece of jewelry and why: my engagement ring – Richard and I met at age 14 and flirted until we started dating at age 17. I had wanted to be his wife and take his last name for many years, even before he asked. So far he has given me a special band every 5 years of our marriage. I keep stacking them with my wedding rings and when my kids ask about them I just tell them they are to constantly remind me how much their Daddy loves me.

"For Good" from the Broadway smash WICKED has been some of my favorite lyrics from the last decade. It's a beautiful portrayal of real friendship. Also, a song "Grateful" (lyrics by John Bucchino) is right up there. It's all about being thankful for whatever comes our way.

Why excites you about waking in the morning: It seems I've always been fortunate to have had a career and "day-job" that always brings surprises and unknown twists each day. To know that as I begin each day I can select projects that I enjoy, with people I adore, and bring together some creativity and fun--well, it doesn't get much better.
What would surprise people about you if they knew: Hmmm, too many surprises to name. Probably best to keep it that way!

Why is style important: Style is certainly not about a fashion trend. Style gives each one of us a chance to express our individuality.

Cause that has touched your heart: WAGS (Wonderful Animals Giving Support)--matches terminally-ill children with their wish for a dog. I had the honor of founding this organization iin 1991, there's nothing as healing or full of unconditional love as a wonderful dog.

If you could be anywhere in the world: For the last twenty years or so, my work has kept me traveling often more than I am at home. So, I've learned to find the places I enjoy tucked away in cities--both large and small. From La Jolla, CA to Portland, Maine, there are treasures awaiting (filled with AMAZING FRIENDS). I'm really at home wherever I am but if I had to choose somewhere right now--Lake Como, Italy would work just fine.

Favorite shoes: Prada Lace-Up Oxfords (dress); Mark Nason Side-Zip Boot (Casual)

I joined the junior board of the Autism Society of Alabama to help raise awareness and join in the search for it's genesis.

Favorite shoes: Do I have to choose??? Essentially every pair of stilettos in my closet...I'm a shoe junkie.

Cause that has touched your heart: Support for people in third world countries who have never known the comforts & safety that we experience daily without even thinking about it.

If you could be anywhere in the world: So Many!!!! But, to choose one, I would have to go with somewhere along eastern Africa...maybe the island of Zanzibar (Spice Island)

The Trendsetters
These are Birmingham's Trendsetters - the people whose effortless chic introduces our region to new designers and new trends. Anyone who knows John Cassimus knows he likes fashion and has an eye for style. It was only appropriate to include this Notable clotheshorse in our top fashionista photo shoot. John Cassimus is an entrepreneur and proprietor of Jinsei and Maki Fresh as well as the former CEO of Zoe's.
Lesley DeCastro, owner of Manhattan South, has a carefree polished sense of style. She dresses with the current trends, but makes sure to be comfortable and casual at the same time. Paget Pizitz grew up in Birmingham with a very notable last name. Seconds after graduating from Auburn this heiress moved to Washington DC. She spent most of my weekends traveling to New York, so after two years, relocated to a wonderful one bedroom in Chelsea where she worked as a fashion recruiter for Fourth Floor Fashion. She fell in live with everything about New York from the Saturday farmers market at the Chelsea Piers to scavenging flea markets on the lower east side for that great find. However, she knew she would end up in Birmingham sooner or later and moved home in the fall of 2008. Currently, I work at the Alabama Council for Economic Education as the Development Director. I also serve on the junior board for Hands on Birmingham, an organization dedicated to serving the community, and this is where I fulfill my philanthropic needs. DRESSING FOR THANKSGIVING

Ever since I can remember I dressed up for the holidays. As a young girl my mom encouraged me to wear cute skirts and sweaters, never just jeans. It was an occasion, just like going to church, and I needed to dress special to make it more momentous than just any regular day. So this thought of dressing up was ingrained in me. I remember in the early nineties wearing stirrup patterned leggings and an Irish wool sweater my mom had bought me in Ireland to Thanksgiving dinner. My senior year in high school- knee highs, a corduroy skirt, and 3/4 sleeve turtleneck sweater. One Thanksgiving in college my grandmother bought me a darling red pea coat - I wore it everywhere that season. When my now husband and I first started dating and I also began visiting his family for the holidays, I asked what should I wear? His reply, what do you mean for Thanksgiving? To me any special day deserves a special attire and of course these days jeans are quite different than they were 10 years ago - a great pair of designer jeans, cute sweater, and chic shoes are perfectly acceptable. However with dresses not being 'too dressy' it is also easy to throw on a sweater dress and leggings or tunic, opaque tights and boots.

THE ANKLE BOOT: TO WEAR OR NOT TO WEAR

All fall I have been back and forth and back and forth about the ankle boot. I am not going to lie to you, when I first saw the boot it brought back painful flashbacks of my Sam and Libby
ankle cowboy boot a la Jessie Spano from Saved by the Bell (you know you had a crush on Zack). Clearly, my fashion sense is something that I put time and effort into and was not something that I was born with. But I digress, back to the boot question about to purchase or not to purchase. I figured, why not (shocking I know)? Frankly, if all else fails and I look as silly as I feared I might then I can just wear them with jeans and no one has to know that they
stop at the ankle.
I must tell you, before I went shopping I did some looking on the internet to see just exactly how this boot was supposed to be worn. What I found was you can wear them with anything: skirts, tights, leggings, pants, the whole bit. For the most part they can function and update the stuff you already have in your closet (which is a huge plus for me).
However, if I am giving that much responsibility to a pair of shoes (that is to make me look stylish, sophisticated and utterly fashionable all at the same time) then I need the shoes to be

Today I have an accomplice in my search, my friend Stacy who is in from out of town. She has been to The Summit but never to the Galleria so off we go. First stop Belk, the selection was okay, as I said, if you are going to rock the ankle boot you it must make a statement. In the shoe department I found a lot of Jessica Simpson (who by the look of all her purple patent leather is getting her inspiration from strippers these days), Rampage, and some miscellaneous brands that I had never really heard of, but nothing that was 'exactly' what I was looking for. Stacy and I ventured out further into the Galleria.
Our next stop was Nine West, who always has cute stuff and I did find a precious gray suede round toe boot that I liked a lot but was not ready to settle after such a sort search. Our next stop was Macy's which has the MOST RANDOM shoe department I have ever been in. They had everything from Unisa to Kors by Michael Kors,we were most overwhelmed by (and a little bit afraid of) the chaos and made a quick exit. But not before spying a darling pair of Kors silver snakeskin boots that for sure made a statement. (I am just not sure what it was saying.) Tired and bootless we make our exit.
Not to be defeated, off we headed to Brookwood. Were I went into Gus Mayer and found a lovely pair of brown suede Prada boots which were more of an investment than I was willing to make in such a trendy item (Sex in the City was a show people I have a budget). As we had put a huge dent in the afternoon by this point, Stacy and I decided to make one last stop at Betsy Prince before we bid farewell. We walked in and there they were (insert chorus of angels singing AAHHH), beautiful soft suede gray, reasonably priced, stylish and sassy Me Too boots.
They were EXACTLY what I had been looking for!! I sort of had a thing for the grey color after seeing the Nine West boots, and these had a little style that I had not seen on any other pair, they fold over at the top so cute!! Stacy agreed so as of today I am officially the new
owner of ankle boots, Jessie Spano, eat your heart out!

THE TRENCH: INSPIRED BY VETERANS

Did you know that one of our favorite coats, the trench, was originally a military jacket? In honor of Veterans' Day My Scoop salutes veterans and the veteran-inspired trench.
The trench coat is a descendant of the heavy serge coats worn by British and French soldiers in World War I. The trench coat was created by Thomas Burberry, the inventor of gabardine fabric, who submitted a design for an army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901. Burberry's raincoat subsequently became part of the service uniform of British officers and was dubbed "trench coat" by the soldiers in the trenches. Many veterans returning to civilian life kept their coats that became fashionable for both men and women. Towards World War II, the trench coat became part of all enlisted men's and officers' kits in many countries' armed forces.
During World War II, the military forces continued to use the trench coat on the battlefield in cold weather. A typical trench coat is a ten-buttoned, double-breasted long coat made with tan, khaki, beige, or black fabric. Trench coats often have cuff straps on the raglan sleeves, shoulder straps (originally used to hold gloves and folding service caps, such as the Glengarry bonnet), and a belt that may also have two small brass D-rings as a salute to its military heritage. The rings were used to secure grenades, or sidearms (or swords in World War I).

What is your favorite pair of shoes? I love peep toe heels because they can be worn all year round. I have this black and gold pair by Enzo Angiolini that are my favorite. I am really digging the comfort and cuteness of ballerina flats and loafers this season too.

What is your favorite pair of boots? I have these brown leather Born boots I bought last fall, that have a slight wedge to them. They are more of a casual style, but oh so comfy, stylish and great for tucking jeans.

What is your favorite item of jewelry? I raided my Grandmother’s old jewelry box not too long ago and found some great gold pieces that she wore around 20 years ago, plus they are sentimental.

Unbelievable - this one word describes Huntsville's newest shopping attraction, Bridge Street, that just opened the first of November. Although most shops and restaurants are still under construction the signs of soon to be stores is dizzying to any fashionista or shopaholic. Most stores are exclusive to Bridge Street in Alabama.
Before I list the fabulous designer stores to come, let me paint a picture for you. You park and then walk onto a cobblestone lined path with retail and restaurants on either side of you. You begin to see the many stores that are there or soon to be. At cross sections of the pathways signs direct you. There is a pizzeria and a blues cafe next to a waterway that run through Bridge Street. Next to a large carousel see a stairs leading down to the water where you can take a gondola ride or water taxi to other parts of Bridge Street. As you continue your walk there are posters of Venice which with the gondola rides and names of some of the areas and restaurants, Bridge Street was inspired by the romantic Italian city.
You walk over bridges which allow the gondolas and water taxis to pass under. Now you are in the heart of Bridge Street with the Westin in full view and surrounded by coming haute attractions. Upscale restaurants, cafes, and even a chocolatier can be found here to whet your palette. And now for the crem de la crem of that Bridge Street offers:

THE BROOCH IS MAKING A COMEBACK

What goes around comes around, we learned this the hard way after we ever so kindly gave away tons of my nice turquoise stone necklaces and earrings only to find it suddenly back two years later. Well my friend it is time to dust off those old brooches because they are Baaaaaaaack!

The brooch is the perfect accessory for anything plain that needs a little extra. Case in point- That little black dress that is hanging in your closet, you love it but its almost that love- hate relationship because you have worn it several times, it has been good to you, it has served it's purpose but its just too plain. All you have to do is add a brooch to the waist line, to the neckline - depending on the style of the dress.

If you do not feel comfortable adding the brooch to your dress, or perhaps the dress is a material that you do not want to leave a hole in, you can simply add the brooch to a clutch. This idea will be especially handy for holiday cocktail parties this year.

Another brooch option, as the weather gets colder add one to your winter hat, toboggan as we say in the South, 'hat sweater' or 'sweater cap' to those from above the Mason Dixon line.

Are you one to buy in bulk?? Add add a brooch to the top of each closed toe stiletto or to your chunky pearl necklace that is the perfect accent to your little black dress.

A brooch on a gold chain or attached to strand of pearls also looks so very sophisticated and with big necklaces in style this season - what a perfect way to update your accessories!

Is It Time to Throw Your Makeup Away? The reality is old makeup can be scary! Being a makeup artist for 20 years, I've consulted with a lot of ladies and one thing I've noticed when looking through their makeup bags or drawers is most ladies don't know when to throw away their cosmetics. I've run across blue eye shadow from the 70s and frosted pink lipstick from the 80s THIS year, that's not good!

Here is a simple guide of how long you should keep your products:
Mascara- 3 months
Lipgloss and Lipstick- 1-2 years
Pencil Eyeliner- 2 years
Liquid and Gel Eyeliner- 6-8 months
Loose and Pressed Face Powder - 2 years
Powder Eyeshadow and Blush- 2 years
Cream Eyeshadow and Blush - 12-18 months
Cream Concealer and Compact Foundation- 12-18 months
Oil Free Liquid Foundation- 1 year
Natural/Mineral Foundations- 6-8 months
Nailpolish- 1 year

If you're STILL not sure when to throw something away keep these two things in mind:
1. If it smells bad or have a distinct odor, get rid of it quick!
2. If you don't remember when you bought the product, throw it away immediately!

I was delighted to have the opportunity today to meet the incredibly talented Kay Unger. She hosted a meet and greet at Saks Fifth Avenue at The Summit from 11-5. At 11 the store was packed with guests while the afternoon allowed more one on one time with Kay, who even helped me into some fabulous dresses that would be ideal for the holidays. The jewel tones are gorgeous and the varying 50's inspired necklines on several cocktail dresses added that extra umph us fashionistas look for. I was also very pleased to find cute, sexy dresses from Kay's younger geared line, Phoebe Couture.
Of course the company was nice too. Glamazons Anne Bromberg and Misty Luna looked gorgeous as always while an incognito visit by a slim and handsome Hicks (that would be our American Idol) was quite fun. Who knew Taylor was a fashionisto! From being zipped up by Kay to having her take interest in My Scoop, was quite a delightful experience. What a fun fashionista Thursday!

THE JOYS OF MUCH TOO MUCH

Bonnie Fuller, the former Editor in Chief at Us Weekly, and one of the most gossiped about women on the planet, wrote a book about her jam-packed life that is inspiring and motivating. The book, The Joys of Much Too Much: Go For The Big Life, The Perfect Guy, and Everything Else You've Ever Wanted (Even If You Don't Think You Have What It Takes), gives women blunt advice on how she has found success in her life, family, and career. Bonnie who I witnessed first hand in the Us Weekly office, some say is like a machine, however when that machine would stop me in the hallway and bring me into her office to ask my opinion on the latest cover, I gained a deep respect for someone who was so focused on their product they sought out other's opinions over their own.
Her book is full of 'Fullerisms' to inspire the modern woman to go after their dreams and realize that in doing so it doesn't mean you have a well-balanced life - it means you have a busy, jam-packed life and each day is full:

"After years of trying to make a living at something I love while raising a family, I've come to the conclusion that a jam-packed, maxed-out, full-to-the-very-top existence is the secret to an insanely happy life, no matter what those odes to "simplicity" say to the contrary.
I've pretty much written off the possibility of ever having peace and quiet in my life. I guess that somewhere along the line I made the decision that I'd rather lead a life that's a blur than one that's a bore."

One of the book's best chapters, Never Facing the Facts, is a life lesson in something every woman faces - negative voices. We hear them from the time we are born telling us what we can and cannot do. They are 'Debbie Downers' and may be friends, family, coworkers, or even a significant other. Their own insecurity and worry convinces them to say doom and gloom comments to you:

We all have those nagging doubts, those little voices in our heads that tell us, "You're nuts, you'll never even make it..."
When those evil whisperers burrow inside your head, stop whatever you're doing, and think for a moment: Who is doing this trash talking? A relentless critical, unsupportive teacher; an insecure parent, passing on his or her own self-doubts and insecurities; a lover who can't wait to kick you while you're down? A boss or coworker threatened by your work ethic or your talent? Or is it a nagging, negative inner voice?
Start tuning them out, literally. These are voices you know better than to listen to. Every time the negative voices start, you have to consciously tell yourself, "No-no-no, I'm not listening; I'm going to think about something else," or start reading a book, or do some work, or make a phone call.

This goes back to the tried and true statement by Earl Nightingale: You are what you think. If you think negatively you get negative results. If you think positively you get positive results. One of the easiest things in the world to do is never go after your dreams out of fear of the naysayers. It is much harder to take the plunge and go for the big life, however if you ask most successful entrepreneurs they never felt like they were taking a risk. Their idea or dream was so ingrained in their thoughts that it became something they just had to do.

Bonnie's book is a great guide for any modern woman who has dreams and desires, any woman looking to have a career and a family. It reminds us what's important and what's not (i.e. having all your cans in the pantry face the same way). So forget about a balanced life and realize that when you want to do something you just have to do it.

THE DEVIL MAY WEAR PRADA, BUT ANGELS WEAR RALPH LAUREN

Thank God for fashion. I was looking back and contemplating how my passion to be in fashion media began. Was there a deciding point? It occurred to me that throughout out my life there were signs and decisions that sent me in this direction. From the idea of hosting a Fashion TV show for tweens at age 10 to designing my own homecoming dress to subscribing to Harper's Bazaar at age 14 to being Fashion Editor of my college paper. The stars truly aligned to get me where I am today. I remember the feeling of 'having to move to New York', not just a want or desire but a deep ingrained calling to fulfill a dream I had since childhood. As I moved with no job, I still felt this calling and I knew I just had to do it. Meeting Ingela Ratledge at Us Weekly led to a part time job there and I also found a part time job at the Anna Sui boutique in New York. The stress of not having a full time job was taking its toll. I wondered how could I afford to be in this expensive city? After interviewing for full time positions at Us Weekly, Rolling Stone, Health, and Sport Illustrated, I waited - my hope was for the Us Weekly position to come through, because I loved the environment.

I remember it being a cold night and praying as I walked down Madison Avenue to my apartment for a sign should I stay? Is this for me? I loved walking down Madison Avenue because I found solace in fashion - whether or not I could afford it, I at least could appreciate the incredible access to it that New York provided. To me it was inspiring to be around such creativity, such style. As I walked past Barney's, Valentino, Donna Karan, I decided to go into the Ralph Lauren boutique and look around. I encountered a sales clerk from Texas and she quickly picked up on my Southern accent. She then proceeded to tell me how she had such a hard time when she moved and she just couldn't find a job. But she stuck with it and now was acclimated to the city and enjoyed every second of it. I left the store without any purchases but full of new encouragement. Those were the words I needed to hear. I called my boyfriend to tell him of my new Southern encounter and as we were talking, I had another call on my cell. I switched over to find a full time offer for Senior Advertising Coordinator at Us Weekly. That day changed my life and it has been uphill ever since, challenging yes, but everyday inspiring.

So Ralph Lauren may be known as a billion-dollar fashion business, but to me an angel in really great clothes.

BRADFORD'S CLOSET: THE ADDITION OF THE SWEATER DRESS

Here it is; my next major purchase of the season!! But first I must make a confession; the bone wrap shirt that I spied last time I was about town in search of high waisted pants, you know the one at Theadora? Well, I bought it. I didn’t want too, I HAD TOO!! It haunted my dreams – literally! My husband: my dear, sweet, handsome, kind, and generous husband is now reading about said wrap for the first time (thank you honey! Please see the previous line). But I had to have it even though it was not so much, or at all in the budge. I have been wearing it secretly (that is between 8-5 on weekdays) for a weeks now. I am obsessed with it and think that I have the makings of my first fall uniform. Needless to say, it looks great with all pants (i.e. jeans, sweat pants, pajama bottoms, etc) and yes, I am wearing it as I type this very word.
Okay, now that I have that out in the open (they are so right, confession is good for the soul)moving on to the next staple for my closet – the sweater dress! I am very much into dresses, you put it on and BAM you are dressed. Grab accessories and lip gloss and you are out the door in no time. This is great for me as I have a love affair with my snooze button and wake up 20 minutes late on a regular basis. Back to the dress, as I said I like dresses and I like comfy sweaters so the fact that they have mated this season is most exciting to me. What I am looking for is a dress that is classic something that I can change the look with by changing the accessories. A dress that can take me from my cubical to the Rare Martini with a change of earrings. I would really love it if I could find it in grey (only one of the hottest colors for fall not to mention blends well with I dunno everything!).

So, shopping day arrived. After I finished a few chores at home I decided to reward myself with the dress. But first and foremost, what to wear to shop!! I start off in my fave pair of Citizen jeans, and by my fave I mean bury me in them because I cannot bear the thought of eternity without them! Paired them with a basic coral colored tank, my Tod’s driving shoes (both classic and comfy), and OF COURSE the bone wrap shirt! I grab a Diet Coke as fuel for the journey and off I go lookin’ pretty good and comfy caz if I do say so myself.
My first stop is Crestline Village, first off for the mums at Harvest Glen (which are lookin’ great.) After that purchase I head into The Pants Store which has stepped it up a notch. They have lots of cute things and even several sweater dresses to choose from by 213 and Jenny Hoi just to name two. While both are cute and grey neither are exactly what I am looking for. I am looking for something simple, flattering but simple. It was defiantly worth the time it took to pop in if just to peruse the cute flats!
While in the village I swing by Laura Kathryn which I love. Not to mention, where my fave dress of the summer was born … it is fuchsia and fabulous I am sure most of you have seen me in it since I wore it like it was all I had, seriously, even my husband noticed so it must have been bad! So I breeze in with my slight caffeine and B12 buzz and look around. Here is what I found, LOTS of cute tunics, short jackets, a great looking reasonably priced black purse, but alas, no sweater dresses. Sad but still stylish I press on.
I needed to grab a book at Barnes & Noble so off to The Summit I went. I heard a rumor that there were sweater dresses in abundance at J.Crew so after my book purchase I headed down the hill… sadly, it was just a rumor. Although, there were lots of cute sweaters any attempts to wear them as dresses would have me arrested for indecent exposure even with tights! But, I did rediscover my love for argyle, I mean seriously, it is too preppy not to love. Alas, I had to go away as the budget had already been stretched by purchase of the bone wrap.
Next stop Urban Outfitters, when I first walked in I immediately feel like I was five years too old to be in there but oh well. I stop and browsed through the books and games ….. they are soo bad, I LOVED on! I saw lots of uber trendy items at ultra low prices but nothing that called out to me. I moved on.
Then to the obvious, Banana Republic. I know I tried to stay away but I could not it was like my go to place and the Diet Coke had worn off by this point and I was almost grumpy. I went in and there it is (insert light from heaven and angelic chorus of AAAAhhhhhh here)!! The perfect dress, exactly what I was looking for (clearly, my clothing Karma has paid off)! It was a dark grey A-line (which looks great on everyone), turtle neck, with puffy sleeves and a seem down the middle. Yippee!!

What made you choose to buy a loft?
I moved to Birmingham from New York City and the loft has the "urban feel" that I am used to.

Because it is the hippest loft condo in Birmingham and I like being in English Village.

Have you heard of Feng Shui? I call my style Feng May.

What is your fave piece of decor and where did it come from?
My favorite piece of furniture is a lamp I purchased in Jasper from a store called High Point Furniture. It features a moose standing in a river. It makes me smile whenever I see it....it's so kitsch.

That although I have a career as an investment advisor and financial planner, I have a great appreciation for art and creativity.

A local artist who is a student at Studio By The Tracks in Irondale just completed the most brilliant painting for me that I have ever owned. His name is John Miller. If you aren't familiar with his work, you soon will be. Birmingham has many inspiring, up and coming artists and it is a real passion of mine to support them.

What is the story behind your guitar collection?
Edward Van Halen is my hero. While I can't shred like he does, I can at least own the same type of guitars he plays!

A GLIMPSE OF ANCIENT GLITZ: POMPEII

Pompeii, the Birmingham Museum of Art's latest exhibit, opens October 14th with a Junior Patrons Preview Gala this Saturday night, October 13 7-11pm visit http://www.artsbma.org/ for tickets.
Pompeii ruins are located near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the commune of Pompeii. It was destroyed and buried during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days. The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under many meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire.
The exhibit which will open Sunday and go through January 28, 2007 is a collection of ancient artifacts including castes of people buried in the ruins, statues, and jewelry, (yes a little bling). Something that connects us through time is a love for style! Gold necklaces and bracelets were found in the ruins and the snake bracelet pictured left was actually a present from a master to his slave girl. Slavery was not unusual in the ancient world, and was a common practice in the Roman Empire. Female slaves often would be expected to provide sexual services to their masters. Hmmm...bling in exchange for favors. It seems these type practices have been going on forever even before Louis Vuitton and rap lyrics.

DRINK OF THE MONTH: PROSECCO

Prosecco is the Italian version of refreshing, well-made, sparkling wine. Created from predominately Prosecco grapes in the northern Veneto region of Italy in the foothills of the Alps, Prosecco is light, affordable, yet sophisticated. Today's Proseccos are dry and very bubbly. Most Prosecco is at its best when consumed within three years of its vintage, but the highest-quality Prosecco can be aged for up to seven years. Prosecco is an ideal sip on a crisp evening at sunset. For a great Bellini always use Prosecco.

Try this Strawberry Bellini recipe from the Food Network for a nice treat:

1 bottle prosecco
2 cups pureed and strained fresh strawberries
Special equipment: Blender, strainer, iced champagne flutes, pitcher and tall "swizzle stirrer" (for the pitcher)
Place 8 Champagne flutes in the freezer for 20 minutes. Open the prosecco and let it stand in an ice bucket for 5 minutes.
Into a pitcher, pour the 2 cups pureed strawberries. Gently pour in the bottle of prosecco and stir gently to combine. Divide among Champagne flutes and serve.
*For Kid Bellinis, substitute sparkling water for the prosecco.

LA DOLCE VITA IN CAPRI

Off Italy’s Amalfi Coast lies a tiny island resort, Capri. Pronounced Cap -ry, not Ca- pree, this island to many is the most beautiful place in the world. When you arrive in Capri by boat, you are greeted by a multi-colored hillside of hotels, cafes, lemon groves, and the bluest water. As you set foot off the boat, you notice a line of cabs waiting for you, white convertibles ready to take you around the twists and turns of the tiny, charming roads of the island. However these roads are few, you will soon find that most places you would like to travel are only accessible by foot.

World renowned as a place where the rich and famous play, throughout this century Capri has been host to everyone from Cary Grant to Naomi Campbell and has the accommodations to prove it. With breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, impeccably fresh cuisine, immaculate hotels and breakfast available in bed or overlooking the isle, Capri brings paradise to life. I remember we arrived on the isle at night and took off to our hotel, the next morning I woke up to my husband saying, “you will not believe this.” We walked over and looked off our balcony onto a true paradise, the sun was shining brightly against the blue water and its reflection danced like diamonds on top of the sea while the colorful villas painted the hillside, it was too breathtaking to even put into words. I felt as if I had woken into to real life Technicolor world.

With tiny paths only accessible by foot creating a maze that weaves around the Piazzetta of Capri, it is easy to get lost amongst these paths and feel like you have traveled back in time to Old World Europe. A day trip to the Mount Tiberius, where the ruler Tiberius built his secluded castle, leads you over 1,000 feet above the sea. Atop Capri you pass beautiful villas guarded by statuesque pillars and draped in blossoms and vines. You cannot help but wonder how they were built, and more so, who lives there. On the island also lies Villa San Michele, the "Axel Munthe Museum", the chair lift to Monte Solaro (the island's most panoramic vantage point), as well as designer shops and local artisan shops specializing in cameos. Don’t miss the village of Anacapri, the antique Phoenician and Greek island Acropolis, which pre-dates Emperor Augustus' times. Narrow streets lead to the Blue Grotto and to the many other romantic and secluded locations of Anacapri, where the sun shines from dawn to sunset. Of the many beaches you must enjoy is La Fontelina – its privacy and gorgeous water are just a short walk down via Tragara and you can enjoy a wonderful lunch in this sunbathing paradise.

Whether you choose to join an organized tour, or rent a private boat with captain, taking to the turquoise waters is the only way to explore some of the most beautiful parts of the island. You can charter a private tour around the island, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. For those planning to explore the waters around Capri, the many beautiful tour boats are a traditional wooden fishing craft, known as Gozzi. These beautiful boats measuring from 7 to 10 m. and manufactured by the prestigious Aprea shipyard, offer the maximum comfort and excellent stability in the water. They are all equipped with comfortable sun deck, sun shade, shower, and ice box. Snorkeling equipment is also available.

A tour of the island and its many grottos (caves) in one of these characteristic boats has to be the most fascinating ways in which to admire the breathtakingly dramatic scenery around the coast of Capri and to feel at one with a landscape capable of evoking the strongest of emotions.

Our private tour guide, Gerianno, told us the history of the island and took us to see the many luminescent grottos around the isle as we enjoyed wine. Gerianno even caught a Yellowfin Tuna while we cruised around Capri. Along our private tour, we stopped to enjoy lunch on the beach, a Caprese and water with gasso (sparkling water). The beaches in Capri are rocky and sandy or simply large rocks that jut out into the ocean where places are naturally made for you to enjoy the sun. As our tour came to an end Gerannio said he wanted us to dine at his sister’s restaurant, Buca di Bacco. That night we had reservations for two at the best table in the house overlooking the Mediterranean. From the Piazzetta go through a passageway to Via Longano and a short walk will take you to Buca di Bacco.

Whether at a café in the Piazzetta or dining under lemon groves, you will enjoy every bite and every sip. The food in Capri is incredibly fresh. The seafood is so rich with flavor it as if it was caught that day. The aroma of spices fills your senses as the steam rises from each platter. The sauces are so savory you will fantasize about the seafood and marinara. With one bite of Mozzarella, you will realize you had never really tasted it before. Even the cheapest wine in Italy is among the best you have ever tasted. For another drink of choice, try a margarita made with lemons or truly indulge in a fresh Bellini with strawberries, peaches, or bananas. With the abundance of lemon groves be sure to enjoy a fresh lemonade on the beach or as you stroll and a sip of homemade Limoncello is a must. Of course, an Italian getaway would not be complete without gelato. Rich and creamy in texture, once you taste true Italian gelato, like Canoli Sicilioni, your palette will not be satisfied with anything else.

With 5 star accommodations, you can certainly enjoy la dolce vita in Frette sheets as well. The grand dame of the island, the Quisi is immortal. Marble and flash bulb territory await you on the glitziest of streets in Capri. Enjoy a Quisi Royale (peach, strawberries and prosecco) on the streetside terrace. What is your favorite dress? My new tangerine trapeze silk satin ruched-neckline dress from Banana Republic. It is cool and comfortable at the same time, perfect for Alabama fall weather. Bright colors are in and this dress can't be missed in a crowd.

What is your favorite pair of jeans? My Capital Tailors jeans. This is a relatively unknown brand but they fit great, a lot like pants and are perfect for the petite woman.

What is your favorite pair of shoes? A pair of tan madras sandals from BCBG at the Summit. They are so unique, they have wooden platforms. It took a while but I mastered the art of walking in them.:)

What is your favorite pair of boots? A pair of brown suede boots from Banana Republic, every time I wear them I get compliments and I have had them for years! They have a little cowgirl flair to them.

What is your favorite coat? I do not own it yet but a white wool coat I spotted at Lara in Patton Creek.

What is your favorite tee? A white quarter length cotton t-shirt from Banana Republic, it dips slightly in the back and make the ever boring plain white t-shirt much more fun.

What is your favorite item of jewelry? A new line of metal jewelry being carried at Interiors at Pepper Place. The artist is from Alabama and her pieces are unbelievable! I had a guy friend tell me he liked my bracelet the other day- that is how unique her pieces are...people take note.

What will you not travel without? The Brics luggage I got for college graduation from Rosenbergers at The Summit. It has held up very well.

What are your favorite designers? A new line of dresses that I have fallen in love with called Max and Cleo, they can be found at Saks.

What is the next item of fashion you are planning to buy? A good deep brown purse for fall- there is one at SOCA that I have my eye on.

What is your favorite gadget? My Verizon Wireless PDA, the network is a reliable must have for busy working fashionistas as well as my Verizon Wireless LG VX8700, the phone is stainless steel and has VZ Navigator perfect for someone who is directionally challenged.

What is your favorite bag? My Sandra Roberts parachute purse from Shoe Fly in Homewood.

What do you carry everywhere with you? My Trish McEvoy makeup bag.

Any favorite stores? SOCA- I am obsessed and on probation. They are so smart about how many items they get in, I know that when I purchase a dress.... chances are that no one else will have it. Their prices are great, I never leave the store without buying something. I also really like Swank the owner is extremely helpful and calls you if something comes in that she thinks you will like, which is very nice and helpful.
