LA DOLCE VITA IN CAPRI

Off Italy’s Amalfi Coast lies a tiny island resort, Capri. Pronounced Cap -ry, not Ca- pree, this island to many is the most beautiful place in the world. When you arrive in Capri by boat, you are greeted by a multi-colored hillside of hotels, cafes, lemon groves, and the bluest water. As you set foot off the boat, you notice a line of cabs waiting for you, white convertibles ready to take you around the twists and turns of the tiny, charming roads of the island. However these roads are few, you will soon find that most places you would like to travel are only accessible by foot.

World renowned as a place where the rich and famous play, throughout this century Capri has been host to everyone from Cary Grant to Naomi Campbell and has the accommodations to prove it. With breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, impeccably fresh cuisine, immaculate hotels and breakfast available in bed or overlooking the isle, Capri brings paradise to life. I remember we arrived on the isle at night and took off to our hotel, the next morning I woke up to my husband saying, “you will not believe this.” We walked over and looked off our balcony onto a true paradise, the sun was shining brightly against the blue water and its reflection danced like diamonds on top of the sea while the colorful villas painted the hillside, it was too breathtaking to even put into words. I felt as if I had woken into to real life Technicolor world.

With tiny paths only accessible by foot creating a maze that weaves around the Piazzetta of Capri, it is easy to get lost amongst these paths and feel like you have traveled back in time to Old World Europe. A day trip to the Mount Tiberius, where the ruler Tiberius built his secluded castle, leads you over 1,000 feet above the sea. Atop Capri you pass beautiful villas guarded by statuesque pillars and draped in blossoms and vines. You cannot help but wonder how they were built, and more so, who lives there. On the island also lies Villa San Michele, the "Axel Munthe Museum", the chair lift to Monte Solaro (the island's most panoramic vantage point), as well as designer shops and local artisan shops specializing in cameos. Don’t miss the village of Anacapri, the antique Phoenician and Greek island Acropolis, which pre-dates Emperor Augustus' times. Narrow streets lead to the Blue Grotto and to the many other romantic and secluded locations of Anacapri, where the sun shines from dawn to sunset. Of the many beaches you must enjoy is La Fontelina – its privacy and gorgeous water are just a short walk down via Tragara and you can enjoy a wonderful lunch in this sunbathing paradise.

Whether you choose to join an organized tour, or rent a private boat with captain, taking to the turquoise waters is the only way to explore some of the most beautiful parts of the island. You can charter a private tour around the island, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. For those planning to explore the waters around Capri, the many beautiful tour boats are a traditional wooden fishing craft, known as Gozzi. These beautiful boats measuring from 7 to 10 m. and manufactured by the prestigious Aprea shipyard, offer the maximum comfort and excellent stability in the water. They are all equipped with comfortable sun deck, sun shade, shower, and ice box. Snorkeling equipment is also available.

A tour of the island and its many grottos (caves) in one of these characteristic boats has to be the most fascinating ways in which to admire the breathtakingly dramatic scenery around the coast of Capri and to feel at one with a landscape capable of evoking the strongest of emotions.

Our private tour guide, Gerianno, told us the history of the island and took us to see the many luminescent grottos around the isle as we enjoyed wine. Gerianno even caught a Yellowfin Tuna while we cruised around Capri. Along our private tour, we stopped to enjoy lunch on the beach, a Caprese and water with gasso (sparkling water). The beaches in Capri are rocky and sandy or simply large rocks that jut out into the ocean where places are naturally made for you to enjoy the sun. As our tour came to an end Gerannio said he wanted us to dine at his sister’s restaurant, Buca di Bacco. That night we had reservations for two at the best table in the house overlooking the Mediterranean. From the Piazzetta go through a passageway to Via Longano and a short walk will take you to Buca di Bacco.

Whether at a café in the Piazzetta or dining under lemon groves, you will enjoy every bite and every sip. The food in Capri is incredibly fresh. The seafood is so rich with flavor it as if it was caught that day. The aroma of spices fills your senses as the steam rises from each platter. The sauces are so savory you will fantasize about the seafood and marinara. With one bite of Mozzarella, you will realize you had never really tasted it before. Even the cheapest wine in Italy is among the best you have ever tasted. For another drink of choice, try a margarita made with lemons or truly indulge in a fresh Bellini with strawberries, peaches, or bananas. With the abundance of lemon groves be sure to enjoy a fresh lemonade on the beach or as you stroll and a sip of homemade Limoncello is a must. Of course, an Italian getaway would not be complete without gelato. Rich and creamy in texture, once you taste true Italian gelato, like Canoli Sicilioni, your palette will not be satisfied with anything else.

With 5 star accommodations, you can certainly enjoy la dolce vita in Frette sheets as well. The grand dame of the island, the Quisi is immortal. Marble and flash bulb territory await you on the glitziest of streets in Capri. Enjoy a Quisi Royale (peach, strawberries and prosecco) on the streetside terrace. The more discreet might enjoy La Scalinatella, but can you resist the Quisi's immaculate service and a chocolate massage in the new spa? www.quisi.it

La Scalinatella is a luxury boutique hotel where guests delight in its unique and intimate hospitality. The extremely comfortable rooms with all facilities are large and have terraces with sea and Charterhouse views. There is a terrace with a swimming pool and a restaurant serving lunch and snacks. In America it is known as "Bella Scalinatella". The Scalinatella is situated in the most panoramic and peaceful area of the Island of Capri. Its service is guaranteed by the professionalism and with the years of experience of the owners, the Morgano family. At midday, lunch can be enjoyed at the restaurants, by the pool, featuring caprese cuisine and an excellent selection of wines.

Located in Anacapri, the most exclusive and unspoilt part of Italy's island of Capri, The Capri Palace stands 300 meters above sea level, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Naples. The Capri Palace has 77 rooms, 6 with their own private gardens and heated swimming pool; 13 luxuriously furnished suites among which one finds the penthouse "Acropolis" bathed in sunlight, boasting a marvellous shell shaped tub from where one can gaze at the stars and across the sea. Then there is the "Megaron" Suite, a spectacular 150-square-meter apartment, featuring a hanging garden, private swimming pool, and an enchanting view of the Bay of Naples. Adjacent to the Capri Palace Hotel, guests can relax at the exceptional "Capri Beauty Farm", one of Europe's most prestigious and modern spas.

The elegant Gozzi are also available for furthering your journey to the breathtaking Amalfi coast where you shop in the boutiques of Positano, visit to the historic center of Amalfi and its spectacular cathedral, or venture to the gardens and villas of Ravello, perched high above the sea.

Best time to travel: May and October, weather is nice and the island isn’t as crowded as in summer months.

COME SAIL AWAY

Looking for a vacation that is more of an adventure than simply sitting on the beach? If you love the water and love a challenge, nothing is quite as fun as sailing. To get started take lessons and get certified. A great weekend getaway is to venture to Annapolis, the sailing capital of the world and home of the United States Naval Academy, to take sailing lessons with those who live to sail. You can travel on Southwest to BWI airport and rent a car to drive the short 20 minutes to Annapolis. Unless you have an aunt and uncle who live in a beautiful house across from the Naval Academy on the Severn River, you should opt to stay downtown among the cobblestone streets and unique shops. The Annapolis Sailing School is a quick drive from all points in Annapolis. The weekend course is Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm and consists of mainly time on the water. You will learn your sailing vocabulary and pretty soon you will be saying Port and Starboard while tacking, bringing alive your inner sailor. Don't forget to get a taste of Annapolis known for their blue crabs and Maryland style broiled crab cakes full of large lump crab meat. Sam's Waterfront Cafe located near the Annapolis Sailing School with a great view of the water is noted by Zagat's and Wine Spectator and boasts incredible food and live jazz. The Annapolis Yacht Club has the most amazing crab cakes and is located right in downtown Annapolis with great views of gorgeous sailboats.
You can also continue your sailing instructions back home as almost every lake has a sailing club. When you feel you need a new nautical challenge, set your sights on a vacation in the Bitter End (named for the end of a rope) in the British Virgin Islands, another beautiful place to get your sea legs. Of course, don't forget another plus of sailing - showing off your nautical style!

CHI-TOWN, SUMMER IN THE WINDY CITY

The thought of heading to a big city in the summer may not revel your inherent desire for sand and water, but with Millennium Park bustling and the sun shining Chicago is a great place to visit in early summer.

One of the aspects that impresses me most about Chicago is the green space specifically the newest green space addition, Millennium Park, opened in 2004 with a world class pavilion designed by Frank Gehry, an interactive water fountain, and the Lurie Gardens. Seeing people outside enjoying this amazing park - walking to Lake Michigan to the Art Institute of Chicago up and down Michigan Avenue, truly makes me yearn for the proposed parks in Birmingham. Green space is an incredible part of a city's energy and something our city needs more of. (Visit www.redmountainpark.org for more information on the park initiatives going on in Birmingham). Chicago's Millennium Park is a wonder of modern art and architecture located right in the heart of Chicago and throughout the summer there is no shortage of activities www.millenniumpark.org.

Another outdoor experience, Ravinia Amphitheatre located in Highland Park boasts incredible summer concerts and theatrical arts. You can splurge on tickets close to the stage or grab a picnic basket and bottle of wine and relax on the lawn for an unforgettable Chi-town experience.

For Italian dining that will leave you saying "bellisimo" Cafe Spiaggia is nestled in the heart of the Magnificent Mile and has evolved into a well-known favorite. Chef-Partner Tony Mantuano and Executive Chef Missy Robbins have created an impressive menu, celebrating the ingredients of the Italian pantry. Visitwww.levyrestaurants.com.

Mark Klemen opened this spot on Earth Day 2007, offering an array of alcohol, juices and tonics that are either certified organic or grown and produced in an eco-friendly environment. Visit www.butterflysocialclub.com.

WHERE DO YOU SUMMER?

These local Birminghamians share where they plan to summer this year. Do you have exciting summer plans? Post and you will be entered to WIN a fabulous wicker beach bag!

"My summer getaway is usually at Lake Martin . Our lake house has been a home away from home for 20 something years. I LOVE IT! From the moment I get up, I enjoy every bit of that lake....walk straight out onto the deck to experience its pristine calmness with my cup of coffee. About mid morning, even if you don't exercise, most people tend to get out beneath ALL of the pine trees for a stroll or jog to pull in some of that clean, fresh air. Then off to the lake for a float...there are no waves crashing up against you, and you can just sit and RELAX and do NOTHING for hours. It is just heavenly! And of course for meals, you can always head over by boat to Sinclair's (the old Kowliga restaurant) or other lakefront restaurants to enjoy a peaceful bite while watching the sun set. Oh, and how could I forget about the unlimited amount of water sports and activities……….from skiing to fishing and the list goes on!! This place is paradise in Alabama." Ryan Graham, Masseuse
For more information on Lake Martin visit www.lakemartin.com

"I'm very excited about going to Sun Valley, Idaho this summer. I've never been before, but my aunt and uncle go almost every year, and they are very gracious to let us use their place during our trip. When I was young, my cousins would regale me and my sister with stories of their trips to Sun Valley, so I can't wait to finally see for myself. It seems like there is an array of outdoor activities to enjoy--from biking to hiking and even fly fishing. But there is also a resort town to enjoy when you might not be feeling quite as outdoorsy. It's the best of both worlds! Plus, it will be a nice break from the hot and humid Alabama July." Callie Sullins, Burr & Forman
For more information visit www.sunvalley.com

"When I have a free weekend over the summer (which isn't often), I go to my parents house on Lake Martin. It's right outside of Dadeville and just about 1 1/2 hours away, so an easy drive and quick getaway! I never was a lake person growing up, but going to Lake Martin this past few years has changed my perspective! I could lay out there all day reading books and magazines, swimming, or going on the boat or seadoo. Of course you have to take the trip to Chimney Rock! I've jumped once, but just from the middle level. It's always a huge party there, especially on the holidays! Usually other folks from Birmingham are down there too and it's a great place to anchor down and meet up!" Lacey Bacchus, Vulcan Park

"I can't wait to go to San Diego. You can lie on the beach all day, and there's lots of sunshine without all the humidity. The pool at the historic Hotel Del Coronado is fun too. It's a great place to people watch and they have delicious frozen drinks. Or, you can rent a convertible and drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to La Jolla to do some shopping. I love to cruise along with the top down and the radio up and take in the ocean views along the PCH, they are beautiful. At night you can do dinner and dancing at an number of fun places in the gaslamp quarter. And, although it sounds cheesy, the zoo and Sea World are great too." TAKE SIESTA IN CABO

Escape to Cabo for a weekend in luxury. Nestled at the tip of the Baja Peninsula this Hollywood hot spot has become known for its plush waterfront resorts, relaxing beaches, incredible margaritas, and championship golf courses.
From beds on the beach to euphoric tequila, Cabo is a playground paradise.

Where to Stay:
Las Ventanas and One & Only Palmilla are drenched in luxury and well worth the price, however Cabo offers a variety of resorts. A very affordable option that is luxurious and perfect for the younger set is Pueblo Bonito Pacifica www.pueblobonito.com. With huge opulent beds on the beach, a holistic spa, minimalist décor, and large suites, Pacifica is nestled on the Pacific side of Cabo where the waves are so magnificent that people sit on the beach at sunset and just watch. Something many people do not know about Cabo is there are only a few places where you can get in the water because the waves have such a powerful riptide. The heart of Cabo is just a 5 minute shuttle away. You can use the resort’s shuttle that leaves every hour on the hour or you can grab a taxi. However, you will most likely not want to leave the resort. http://www.pueblobonitopacifica.com/

What To Do:
There are plenty of water activities in Cabo, when booking your trip ask your travel agent about snorkeling and deep sea fishing, so that these are already booked for you before you get there. It makes for a very easy trip. The snorkeling tours are amazing you will see angel fish, parrot fish, and many more, while also enjoying meals and cocktails. Cabo is known for its Marlin, so set aside a day so you can charter a boat and get your catch of the day. There are also services through your charter company that will help you ship the fish back to the United States.

Where To Eat:
You do not want to miss these top 5 authentic Cabo dining experiences:
1. Mi Casa – a huge thatched restaurant with divine enchiladas and potent margaritas. After one visit it will be evident why people go on hiatus in Mexico. This is also where Jennifer Aniston spent New Years Eve '06!
2. The Office – eat right on the beach, this popular dining destination is a must serving up Baja crabs, shrimp enchiladas, and delicious frozen concoctions.
3. Panchos –named after Pancho Villa this hole in the wall Mexican restaurant has the best Chile Relleno in the world and boasts over 500 varieties of tequila. In fact, if you want a tequila that they do not have, your meal is on the house!
4. Esperenza – known as Gwyneth’s fave hotel, this resort also boats an incredible restaurant with gourmet Mexican cuisine. You sit overlooking the water as the waves crash. www.esperanzaresort.com
5. Las Ventanas Sea Grille – this maybe the most expensive meal you have ever had, but this 7 course meal with authentic Mexican ingredients is amazing. Started off with a tequila sampling and fresh guacamole, followed with decadent entrée after decadent entrée. The Sea Grille makes for a romantic atmosphere because it is positioned out on a deck open to the night sky and windows all around. www.lasventanas.com

Things You Should Know:
1. Do not talk to strangers – they are trying to sell you something the minute you step off the plane from timeshares to drugs to jewelry.
2. Tell people you are 25 so they do not harass you about timeshares (apparently you have to be 26 to take advantage).
3. Stock up on tequila – because bottles are so inexpensive there!
4. The margaritas are absolutely incredible, but very potent!
5. Look before you swim because in almost all areas of Cabo, the powerful riptide of the waves makes the water not swimmable. (However there are several swimming beaches (like Lover's Beach when you're feeling hot, hot, hot) and plenty of places for snorkeling.)

For bookings contact Adventure Travel at 205.444.4800 and ask for Penni or visit www.adtrav.com.

TAKING A BITE OUT OF THE BIG APPLE

With a non stop 2 hour Delta Flight the abundance of the Big Apple is at your feet. But with so many choices and not an abundance of time – how do you decide what to do? With New York Magazine’s Adam Platt profiling the latest and greatest eateries every week, with amazing exhibits at all the museums, and hip boutique hotels opening constantly, here are a few musts of the moment to help you plan your trip to the city that never sleeps.
New York is famous for its fabulous food and rightly so with celebrity chefs, exotic ingredients, and more foodies per capita than any other place in the world, taking a bite out of the Big Apple is much more than a metaphor. So grab your fork or chopsticks and dig into these:
Kobe Club – New York’s newest steakhouse making the cut, Kobe Club is absolutely delicious and with 2,000 Samuri swords hanging from the ceiling, it sets the scene for a dangerously exhilarating meal. Kobe Club 68 West 58th Street New York, NY 10019 212.644.5623

Next Door Nobu – Robert Dinero’s famed restaurant’s more casual counterpart, Next Door Nobu has the same menu as Nobu without the need for reservations. Incredibly fresh sushi and a variety of saketinis make this one of the best sushi restaurants in the world. The food literally melts in your mouth creating a culinary experience you will not soon forget. And of course the occasional celebrity sighting is fun, too! 105 Hudson St New York, NY 10013 212.334.4445

Sfoglia – Mediterannean menu includes generous portions of homemade pastas and sauces. But as delicious as the pasta dishes are the most impressive may be their desserts which include a butternut squash cranberry tart with homemade vanilla bean ice cream. 92nd & 93rd 1402 Lexington Avenue New York, NY 10128 212.831.1402 www.sfogliarestaurant.com

ino – Once you turn on Bedford the noise of the city quiets and you feel like you are in a more intimate part of the world, but if you blink you may miss 'ino. This charming little panini café in the Village may be the tiniest restaurant on earth, but the cozy setting, delicious sandwiches, antipasta, and fresh bellinis make it well worth the squeeze. Anyways what is a little elbow bumping between foodies? 21 Bedford St Between Houston Street and Downing Street New York, NY 10014 212.989.5769

STK - Steak with a sophisticated touch, this chic eatery has a wonderful Tuna Tartare, petite cuts of meat, and Dirty Bird Martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. Don't be surprised if this joint is still jumping at midnight with late night reservations and with hot spot Tenjune downstairs you will want to make a late night of it too! 26 Little W 12th Street Between Washington Street and 9th Avenue New York, NY 10014 646.624.2444

Bar at Etats-Unis – Another small establishment this eatery off the typical foodie path nestled in the Upper East Side. Bar at Etats-Unis is the sister restaurant of Etats-Unis and carries the exact same menu but also a variety of delectable tapas. Their guacamole is so fresh and spicy, their crab dip is phenomenal, and their fondue is an unbelievable treat. Enjoy these three menu choices with a glass or their house wine or try their Margatini, and you are in for a wonderful night! 242 E 81st New York, NY 10028 Between Second and Third Ave 212.517.8826

Now that your stomach is full, what to see, what to see? There is Museum Mile with the Met, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, and more. There is Broadway with long running hits and come-and-go performances. And of course, there is shopping!
No matter how many times you visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you will never see it all. The amazing exhibits include ancient artifacts that leave you in awe, armor collections from Medieval times, and masters like Van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso. Then there is the Fashion Institute with exhibits like Nan Kempner: American Chic displaying the well-stuffed closets of the fashion icon. This exhibit will have fashionistas exclaiming "I do not shop, I collect!" Met Art 1000 5th Ave New York, NY 10028

A must see on Broadway right now is the hilarious farce, The Little Dog Laughed with Tom Everett Scott (TV's Saved) as the closeted leading man. With twists and turns that will keep audiences guessing, The Little Dog Laughed cleverly reflects our celebrity-obsessed society. www.thelittledoglaughedonbroadway.com

As wonderful as Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue are, there is something quite charming and captivating about Soho that makes it a shopper's, excuse me, fashion collector's heaven. Designer boutique after designer boutique line the cobblestone streets. Pick up a pretty frock at Betsey Johnson on Mercer, a great top at Jill Stuart, a funky tshirt at Anna Sui on Greene, and then pop into Tarina Tarantino on Greene for her unique, quirky jewelry. Don't forget to visit the sidewalk vendors for handmade jewelry and even handmade journals. Grab lunch at Mercer Kitchen and you have enjoyed the perfect day in Soho.

Now it is time to crash and it is only fitting since you are getting so little sleep to do your snoozing in style.

HIT THE SLOPES

Whether you love hearing the swoosh of the fresh pow pow after a night of snow fall or you simply prefer to dress up in sexy ski bunny clothes – a ski vacation is one of the most relaxing and invigorating vacations you can choose. Here are a few favorites:

The Breck
The perfect little ski town, it is always the holiday season in Breckenridge. Stay at the Beaver Run Resort which is ski in/ski out, has great access to slopes, and a shuttle to all destinations along Main Street. The slopes are even labeled Black, Blue/Black, Blue, Blue/Green, to more accurately define degree of difficulty. After a long day of skiing hit the Breckenridge Brewery for a tall locally made lager to whet the palette.
Plenty of pizza joints abound, but if you are looking for a more memorable meal check out Hearthstone, this restaurant offers delicious food, in a cozy setting at casual dining prices.

In late January each year, blank canvases of snow become works of art at the International Snow Sculpture Championships. From a whimsical bouquet of enormous flowers, to thought provoking abstract shapes, sculptors form these masterpieces before thousands of spectators over the course of five days in the heart of town. Breckenridge also hosts its own Mardis Gras. www.gobreck.com
